As the days get longer and temperatures inch upwards, we start to long for our warm weather wardrobes. Just like we don new seasonal clothing, we can welcome Spring into our homes without spending a lot of money.
Here are three easy ways to help your home “spring forward” to a new look.
Color: Color can be the easiest change of all to make at any time of year, as well as the least expensive. This spring’s colors are bright and vibrant, as shown in this photo of accessories in an étagère at one of my favorite shops, The Rusted Chandelier, in Kirkwood. A pop of yellow or spring green brings the warmth of the sun or the color of newly emerging grass into your home. Don’t want to splurge on new accessories? Redo what you have, or make a trip to a thrift or consignment store to discover some older accessories and bring them back to life. A coat of spray paint can be all that is needed to make a tired or dated piece sing. Ginger jars are very much on trend now, so look for an older one that you can revitalize to be perfectly in style. And a new coat of paint can rejuvenate an old piece of furniture from Grandma’s attic. And while you’re thinking of color, black and white is a fabulous backdrop for a burst of spring color, as seen in this black chair with a bright pillow accent!
Linens and Textiles: If you’ve layered your home with faux fur throws or wintry linens, it’s time to lighten up for the new season. Swap a heavily textured throw for a lighter one in a brighter color, or change the throw pillow on a chair or sofa. (Bird-themed pictures and accessories are very popular right now, and I just picked up a large blueand- white bird-patterned pillow for my family room that brightens the chair it sits on considerably). Layer your table with a floral placemat and contrasting cloth napkin. Pier 1 offers some fun circular placemats with the look – and texture – of a flower for instant visual interest and a fun start to your Spring dinner party.
Redesign Your Space: I always find it’s fun to move things around a bit at the start of a new season, or when the holiday décor comes down and everything looks bare. Just because you’ve always put a vase in a certain spot doesn’t mean it won’t sing somewhere else and make you look at it in a different light. It can be fun to pull a lot of accessories from throughout your home, put them all on your kitchen table, and then find new places to display them. Bookshelves or your mantel offer some prime real estate to redesign. And don’t stop there; move some pieces of art or a mirror from one room to the next; create a gallery wall of your favorite photos, or switch your bedside lamps to your family room. Possibilities are endless, and you haven’t had to spend a cent.
